Bruce Springsteen - No Surrender (from Born In The U.S.A. Live: London 2...

Not many official days left. You may think there won't be much to remember from this busy, weird academical year that some may want to forget soon. However, a year that will hopefully take you to the beginning of a great future. Think high and make your dreams come true. And as Bruce sings. No surrender. Never give up!

Gonzalo...Music time? Let's listen to the BOSS!

Bruce Sprinsteen  On TOUR.

Barcelona last weekend, Dublin today and concerts every week for months to come.

Ohhhh)  (Ohhhh)   (Ohhhh)   (Ohhhh)

Well we busted …………   ……..   …………..
Had to get away from those ……….
We learned more from a three-minute record
Baby, than we ever learned ….. ……………..
Tonight I hear the neighborhood drummer sound
I can feel my ………………. begin to pound
You say you're tired and you just wanna close your eyes
And follow your …………….. down

Well we made a promise we swore we'd always …………………
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Like …………….. in the winter's night with a vow to defend
No retreat, baby, no surrender

Well now young faces grow sad and old
And hearts of fire grow cold
We swore …………… brothers against the wind
I'm ready to grow young again
And hear your sister's voice calling us …………..
Across the open yards
Well maybe we could cut someplace of our own
With these drums and these guitars

'Cause we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
……………. brothers in the stormy night with a vow to …………….
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Hey! (Lalala...)(Lalala...)(Lalala...)

Now on the street tonight the lights grow dim
The walls of my room are closing in
There's a war outside still raging
you say it ain't ours anymore …… ………….
I wanna sleep beneath peaceful skies in my lover's ………….
With a wide open country in my eyes
And these romantic ………….. in my head

Because we made a promise we swore we'd always remember
No retreat, baby, no surrender
…………. brothers in the stormy night with a vow to ……….
No retreat, baby, no surrender
No retreat, baby, no surrender
Ohhhh)  (Ohhhh)   (Ohhhh)   (Ohhhh)

Hungry for more...?

HUNGRY HEART

Hungry heart ( remember /hɑː(r)t/ you may need to remember the pronunciation for ABAU 😬)
with different explanations about the meaning of this catchy song. CAN YOU DISCUSS IN PAIRS THE MEANING OF THE SONG?

Got a wife and kids in Baltimore, Jack
I went out for a ride and I never went back
Like a river that don't know where it's flowing
I took a wrong turn and I just kept going

Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hungry heart

I met her in a Kingstown bar
We fell in love I knew it had to end
We took what we had and we ripped it apart
Now here I am down in Kingstown again

Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hungry heart

Everybody needs a place to rest
Everybody wants to have a home
Don't make no difference what nobody says
Ain't nobody like to be alone

Everybody's got a hungry heart
Everybody's got a hungry heart
Lay down your money and you play your part
Everybody's got a hungry heart

Everything, everything by Nicola Yoon

Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon

So Monday 2nd October will be the first day to dedicate a period for reading time.
My first lesson on Monday will be with 3 ESO bilingual so this is what we will start reading.

The White Room
I’VE read many more books than you. It doesn’t matter how many you’ve read. I’ve read more. Believe me. I’ve had the time.
In my white room, against my white walls, on my glistening white bookshelves, book spines provide the only color. The books are all brand-new hardcovers—no germy secondhand softcovers for me. They come to me from Outside, decontaminated and vacuum-sealed in plastic wrap. I would like to see the machine that does this. I imagine each book traveling on a white conveyor belt toward rectangular white stations where robotic white arms dust, scrape, spray, and otherwise sterilize it until it’s finally deemed clean enough to come to me. When a new book arrives, my first task is to remove the wrapping, a process that involves scissors and more than one broken nail. My second task is to write my name on the inside front cover.
PROPERTY OF: Madeline Whittier
I don’t know why I do this. There’s no one else here except my mother, who never reads, and my nurse, Carla, who has no time to read because she spends all her time watching me breathe. I rarely have visitors, and so there’s no one to lend my books to. There’s no one who needs reminding that the forgotten book on his or her shelf belongs to me.
REWARD IF FOUND (Check all that apply):
This is the section that takes me the longest time, and I vary it with each book. Sometimes the rewards are fanciful:
⁰ Picnic with me (Madeline) in a pollen-filled field of poppies, lilies, and endless man-in-the-moon marigolds under a clear blue summer sky.
⁰ Tea with me (Madeline) in a lighthouse in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean in the middle of a hurricane.
⁰ Snorkel with me (Madeline) off Molokini to spot the Hawaiian state fish—the Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.
Sometimes the rewards are not so fanciful:
⁰ A visit with me (Madeline) to a used bookstore.
⁰ A walk outside with me (Madeline) just down the block and back.
⁰ A short conversation with me (Madeline) discussing anything you want, on my white couch, in my white bedroom.
Sometimes the reward is just:
⁰ Me (Madeline).
SCID Row
My disease is as rare as it is famous. It’s a form of Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, but you know it as “bubble baby disease.”
Basically, I’m allergic to the world. Anything can trigger a bout of sickness. It could be the chemicals in the cleaner used to wipe the table that I just touched. It could be someone’s perfume. It could be the exotic spice in the food I just ate. It could be one, or all, or none of these things, or something else entirely. No one knows the triggers, but everyone knows the consequences. According to my mom I almost died as an infant. And so I stay on SCID row. I don’t leave my house, have never left my house.
Brthdae Uish
“Movie Night or Honor Pictionary or Book Club?” my mom asks while inflating a blood pressure cuff around my arm. She doesn’t mention her favorite of all our post-dinner activities—Phonetic Scrabble. I look up to see that her eyes are already laughing at me.
“Phonetic,” I say.
She stops inflating the cuff. Ordinarily Carla, my full-time nurse, would be taking my blood pressure and filling out my daily health log, but my mom’s given her the day off. It’s my birthday and we always spend the day together, just the two of us.
She puts on her stethoscope so that she can listen to my heartbeat. Her smile fades and is replaced by her more serious doctor’s face. This is the face her patients most often see—slightly distant, professional, and concerned. I wonder if they find it comforting.
Impulsively I give her a quick kiss on the forehead to remind her that it’s just me, her favorite patient, her daughter.
She opens her eyes, smiles, and caresses my cheek. I guess if you’re going to be born with an illness that requires constant care, then it’s good to have your mom as your doctor.
A few seconds later she gives me her best I’m-the-doctor-and-I’m-afraid-I-have-some-bad-news-for-you face. “It’s your big day. Why don’t we play something you have an actual chance of winning? Honor Pictionary?”
Since regular Pictionary can’t really be played with two people, we invented Honor Pictionary. One person draws and the other person is on her honor to make her best guess. If you guess correctly, the other person scores.
I narrow my eyes at her. “We’re playing Phonetic, and I’m winning this time,” I say confidently, though I have no chance of winning. In all our years of playing Phonetic Scrabble, or Fonetik Skrabbl, I’ve never beaten her at it. The last time we played I came close. But then she devastated me on the final word, playing JEENZ on a triple word score.
“OK.” She shakes her head with mock pity. “Anything you want.” She closes her laughing eyes to listen to the stethoscope.
We spend the rest of the morning baking my traditional birthday cake of vanilla sponge with vanilla cream frosting. After it’s cooled, I apply an unreasonably thin layer of frosting, just enough to cover the cake. We are, both of us, cake people, not frosting people. For decoration, I draw eighteen frosted daisies with white petals and a white center across the top. On the sides I fashion draped white curtains.
“Perfect.” My mom peers over my shoulders as I finish up. “Just like you.”
I turn to face her. She’s smiling a wide, proud smile at me, but her eyes are bright with tears.
“You. Are. Tragic,” I say, and squirt a dollop of frosting on her nose, which only makes her laugh and cry some more. Really, she’s not usually this emotional, but something about my birthday always makes her both weepy and joyful at the same time. And if she’s weepy and joyful, then I’m weepy and joyful, too.

HOW TO SUMMARISE A TEXT. 2 BACH

 https://teachingenglishpalmira.blogspot.com/2013/05/how-to-write-summary.html

READ THE TEXT AND WRITE A SUMMARY OF ABOUT 50 WORDS

This year America’s largest citizens came into conflict with several organisations. The most controversial thing was how airlines treat overweight travellers. Many airlines make them pay for two seats, but according to the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance (NAAFA) they often do it in an arbitrary manner. It is campaigning against Southwest Airlines, which makes passengers buy two seats if they are too wide for one. Fitness organisations have also offended fat activists. In California the dance instructor Jennifer Portnick became a heroine when she sued Jazzercise, the world’s largest dance fitness organisation. Although she weighs 108 kg,  Portnick says she is fit enough to teach exercise classes, but she was rejected for the job because she looked fat. After a court case, Jazzercise agreed in May that it would not require its instructors to look, as well as be, fit.

Another conflict was with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) when it introduced its recent campaign for vegetarianism. Airport posters showing a large stomach with the slogan “Don’t buy two seats, go vegetarian” were replaced. But the substitute campaign has caused just as much offence. It shows an overweight Elvis Presley with the line: “Don’t be Cruel to Your Heart and Body”. “It’s not acceptable to represent other groups this way”, said a NAAFA spokeswoman. “We wouldn’t see Asian or African-Americans, short people or disabled people in a campaign like this. So why fat people? This promotes the idea that it is shameful to be fat”. “We are not against fat people. We are against fat”,  answered PETA spokeswoman. “Obesity is a social problem. And we need to stop being so sensitive about saying that people are overweight.

SUMMARY
The text is about how fat activists, represented by an organization called the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance, are fighting against discrimination by certain airline companies, fitness organisations and anti-fat publicity campaigns. Although the latter argue that obesity is a social problem, the NAAFA says that there is nothing shameful about being fat.

So it seems we also have a new King: Carlos Alcaraz

from the Press Conference | 2022 US Open Final

Carlos Alcaraz, the future of tennis, has arrived: Spanish teenager wins US Open and becomes world number one

Spanish tennis player Carlos Alcaraz made history on Sunday with his win over Casper Ruud at the US Open final. The 19-year-old claimed his first Grand Slam title, defeating the Norwegian player 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(1), 6-3 and taking the world number one ranking. Alcaraz is now the youngest player to hold the top ranking in history, unseating Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, who became world number one in 2001, when he was 20 years old. He is also the youngest Grand Slam champion since his fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal won the French Open in 2005. “I’m ready to win a Grand Slam this year,” Alcaraz told EL PAÍS in April. On Sunday, he proved this to be true.

After winning match point, Alcaraz climbed past photographers and into the stands to give his father and his team a big hug. “This is something I dreamed of since I was a kid, to be number one in the world, to be the champion at a Grand Slam,” he later said in an on-court interview.

Alcaraz showed on Sunday that he is at the level of the so-called “Big Three” – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. This could mark a before and after in the world of tennis, in which these giants have reigned supreme. Alcaraz plays a different kind of tennis. It had been a long time since a player has come on to the court with such force or so much decision. He has already defeated Nadal and Djokovic, and the US Open has revealed a new side to Alcaraz: he knows how to suffer.

The Spaniard started off strong and won the first set, but Ruud continued to push back, firing back shots that put the 19-year-old off center. No point was given away. While Alcaraz was the fan favorite, the Norwegian was not to be underestimated. Under the closed roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium – it was raining in New York – Ruud used his strong forehand to fight back. In a race towards the net, Alcaraz missed the ball and threw his racket into the net. Opposite, Ruud, 23, was firing back balls like a machine. Alcaraz’s coach, former number one Juan Carlos Ferrero, looked concerned. He told the 19-year-old: “Charlie, convince yourself that you have to go for the game!” “Remain positive at all times!” “Let’s get hard on the first three balls!” Alcaraz dove deep and made his comeback.

Throughout the US Open, Alcaraz has shown he is able to turn games around with his determination and strength. He drew match point against Italy’s Jannik Sinner in the quarters; he battled from a break down in the fifth set to beat Marin Cilic in the fourth round; and came from behind to defeat Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals. Against Ruud, he showed the same force.

In the final game of the third set, Alcaraz saved two set points by sprinting to the net. Fans jumped from their seats when he smashed an overhead to force a tiebreak. The psychological impact on Ruud, who had missed two opportunities to win the game, was devastating. Even still, he did not let up. But he struggled to make returns, while Alcaraz wore down the player with aces. After three hours and 20 minutes, the Spaniard was the Grand Slam champion, just as he predicted he would be.

2 BACH. LEARNING WITH SONGS

Yesterday  I heard that Spanish scientists had managed to cure a few patients of AIDS by transplanting stem cells. I though: what an extraordinary piece of news!.  And my mind went to some of those who died too soon such as Freddy Mercury.
It was my plan to include a song every week so you could have a look at the lyrics, listen, practise pronunciation and sing during the weekend. I am not sure that will happen every single week but let’s do it as often as possible.
Going over Freddy Mercury’s biography I was happy to discover that Feltham was our first destination in London. I only spent a couple of weeks there but kept going back for years as I had great friends living there. I also read about his former girlfriend Mary Austin, who, by the way, inherited his magnificent house in Kensington and a fortune.  And it took me to newspaper articles like the interview with his mother 20 years after his death. She has been to WE WILL ROCK YOU the musical 6 times, I may have been even more as I have taken  my students to that musical as first opiton for years . Well, that is the idea. If you are curious about something: read, explore,  enjoy and you will be learning.

  • In the  part of the song bellow he missed some words. Can you find more apart from the underlined?
  • Find a synonym for tremble and pain.
  • Phonetics. Find the word with a different sound:  face  aching  away  again
  • What does he regret in the last line, why is he using past perfect?

Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger, now he's dead
Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away
Mama, ooo
Didn't mean to make you cry
If I'm not back again this time tomorrow
Carry on, carry on, as if nothing really matters
Too late, my time has come
Sends shivers down my spine
Body's aching all the time
Goodbye everybody I've got to go
Gotta leave you all behind and face the truth
Mama, ooo (anyway the wind blows)
I don't want to die
I sometimes wish I'd never been born at all
