TEN EASY SENTENCES FOR YOU TO TRANSLATE INTO ENGLISH.

SO AND SUCH 4ºESO

It was so hot we couldn’t work. | November was such a cold month |
Usamos soy such significan "tan" y se utilizan para dar énfasis. Se diferencian porque cada uno sigue una estructura.
SO (tan) va seguido de:
→ adjetivos y adverbios.
(adjetivo) He is so tall (él es tan alto) = es enfático, implica que es muy alto.
(adverbio) He drove so quickly (él conducía tan rápido) =es enfático, implica que iba muy deprisa.
→ cuantificadores "many", "much", "few", "little", con sustantivo detrás o sin él.
Contables en plural
So many (tantos / tantas) There were so many people on the street you could hardly walk (había tantas personas en la calle que apenas podías caminar)
So few (tan pocos / tan pocas) I've got so few books I can keep them on one shelf (tengo tan pocos libros que los puedo guardar en un único estante)
Incontables So much (tanto)
You spend so much time in front of the computer (pasas tanto tiempo delante del ordenador)
So little (tan poco)
I have so little free time (tengo tan poco tiempo libre)
SUCH (tan, semejante, tal) va seguido de:
→ a / an + adjetivo + sustantivo (en singular)
He is such a tall man (es un hombre tan alto, ¡qué hombre tan alto!)
→ adjetivo + sustantivo (plural)
A: I saw Maid in Manhattan yesterday (ayer ví Sucedió en Manhattan)
B: I don't like such romantic films (no me gustan esas películas tan románticas)
→ a / an + sustantivo (para dar una opinión )
The concert was such a success that they decided to give another (el concierto tuvo tanto éxito que decidieron dar otro)

→ sustantivo incontable ("semejante", "ese tipo de")

Las frases con such se pueden traducir por la expresión: ¡Qué + sustantivo + tan / más + adjetivo!
It is such a beautiful day (¡Qué día tan bonito! / ¡Qué día más bonito!)
