This blog has been created to share news, projects, videos and everything I may find interesting with my students. I will also upload their work and anything I consider useful for them to improve their English. Everybody is welcome. Formerly known as Englishasbarxas, I have now adopted the name of my new school: IES ROU. PALMIRA CALVAR
Today I will be explaining the structure "Have/Get something done" among other things. Have a look at this video if it is not clear or you wish to revise it at any other time

I just love James Corden! I am not a follower of his late night show but I think some of his Carpool karaoke shows are amazing, being Adele's and Paul McCartney's two of my favorite ones. You may find Elton Jonh's ( if you saw Rocket man, you will know who I am talking about...) entertaining as well, but there are many others for you to watch.
It took me some time to find out about another of his shows: Crosswalk the musical.
James Corden and his theatre company act out some scenes from very well known musicals at crosswalks in different cities in USA and Europe.
I have been fond of musicals since the first time I set foot in London, back in 1985. I remember finding out about the number of years "Cats" had been running and I couldn't believe it, 25 I was told back then. Since 2006 Les Misérables has become the world's longest-running musical, which has been seen by over 70 million people in more than 50 countries. The musical premiered in 1985 can still be seen ( well, you will have to wait till the quarantine finishes) at Queen's theatre in London.
Among all the musicals James Corden has chosen to perform, this is by far, my favourite. I have such a good time watching it that I forgive him for the mistake about the historical background of Victor Hugo's novel. It is not exactly about The French revolution (1789) but he Paris uprising (1832). Anyway... he is great!!! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
One of the segments from the film, in case you feel like comparing.
I have recycled a post from 2016. So these are no longer young teenagers.
"Furious Monkey House" is a band from Pontevedra, Spain, formed by Mariña, Carlota, Amaya, Irene and Manu in March 2014.
The band recorded a five-track demo before recording their debut album between February and March 2015 at Planta Sónica (Vigo) and at Abbey Road Studios (London), the famous studios where The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and many other groups have been recording their albums.
So what is special about them? Their age! They are just teenagers like those of you who are in 1st or 2nd ESO so they have to go to school, do homework, take exams and on top of that they make great music!
When I'm SleepingI look up and I can't breath
in my room every dark night
I can't dream about happy things
please turn on the light yes
There's a picture on the wall
and it's looking at me
it smiles at twelve o'clock
and (it) starts laughing
When I'm sleeping
in the darkness
I find a demon in my closet
When I am sleeping
in the darkness
there are monsters under my bed
but I like them
My skin turns as white as snow
when I hear the voices
the shadows star to dance around
and I follow that beat
My heart is going more than fast
I don't know if I wanna stop it
come with us into my room
dance with your nightmares
When I'm sleeping
in the darkness
I find a demon in my closet
When I am sleeping
in the darkness
there are monsters under my bed
but I like them
When I'm sleeping
in the darkness
When I'm sleeping
in the darkness
When I'm sleeping
in the darkness
When I'm sleeping
in the darkness

Hamilton is a tremendously successful and still extremely expensive musical. The first years on stage, people could pay up to 3.000 dollars for a seat. But why?
The lucky ones who have been able to afford a ticket or have been given one as a very special present may feel as disappointed as the nine-year-old girl who was part of John Krassinski's new online show a few days ago. The huge difference is that she could talk to Lin-Manuel Miranda and had the whole cast of actors singing her favourite song: "Alexander Hamilton", which you will be able to listen to if you go to minute 8.30 of the video below.
It was such an amazing event that the video has got millions of views in few days and articles have been written in newspapers around the world about that outstanding moment.
They were using Zoom and this is how they look like. We can experiment next week but will have to split the class in two, otherwise there will be too many people singing at a time😊.
As I am writing, I am being told that app is not safe at all. So forget about what I have just said.
Activities
1. Go to the third line and Answer why.
2. Can you find sentences in the Passive Voice?. What tenses are they?
3. In the text you can find two relative pronouns that can be translated by "que" into Galician/Spanish. Why are they different?.
4. Look for a synonym for the following adjectives: upset, superb, secure, very big.
5. Rewrite the following sentence:
It was such an amazing event that the video has got millions of views.
6. How do you translate "What I have just said" into Galician/Spanish. Why am I using the present perfect here?
7. Read the article from The Guardian and answer the following questions:
Where was Aubrey (the little girl) going to see the show?
I hope by now all of you have had the chance to finish reading The curious incident of the dog in the night-time. A week before the beginning of the lockdown, March 6th, the team from the reading club + Katie+ me, had a great meeting. I had been to London at Carnival so we had English tea and biscuits.
I was happily surprised to find out my students loved tea.
Most of them had read as far as page 140 ( some had already finished) and they answered questions and commented on different aspects of the book.
What about next meeting? Will that be online? Tell me when you are ready and we can have a video chat.
It won't be the same though.
SORRY about the delay. Last week was a nightmare. I needed a couple of days to recover.
We don't know yet if next week we will have to go on working and following the curriculum or just revise during the 3rd term. Just in case we have to go on, Unit 6 will be the future tense, or tenses and the conditionals so.. let's start singing!!! This is a song I have used lots of times, a great version filmed by Seso Durán with our 2nd bilingual students a few years ago.
