Seven Worlds, One Planet

Do you like documentaries? Do you ever watch them? They are a great source of information about environment. If they are produced by the BBC and have David Attenborough as a narrator, then  they are worth watching.

Seven continents, all unique. Seven Worlds, One Planet is the latest natural history landmark from BBC Studios’ Natural History Unit, narrated by Sir David Attenborough. The series will showcase the rich diversity of Earth’s seven continents and what makes each one unique.

'Just don't waste': David Attenborough's heartfelt message to next generation

At launch of BBC nature series Seven Worlds, One Planet, Attenborough says message is finally getting through
David Attenborough has delivered a heartfelt message to children around the world on how they can help save the planet: “Live the way you want to live but just don’t waste.”
“You can do more and more and more the longer you live, but the best motto to think about is not waste things,” Attenborough replied. “Don’t waste electricity, don’t waste paper, don’t waste food. Live the way you want to live but just don’t waste. Look after the natural world, and the animals in it, and the plants in it too. This is their planet as well as ours. Don’t waste them.”

News . Have you heard or read the news over the weekend?

Have a look at the first paragraphs of the articles from e EL País. (English Edition)  about the riots in Barcelona.

There are so many words coming from Latin that the text can be understood  even if you don't know much English. ( To encourage those of my students whose English is not that good)

Women Writers Day

Did you know there was a day in Spain to celebrate Women writers?
Did you know it is today?
Well, I didn't. I learnt it this afternoon  while I was listening to  "relatos en cadena",  a programme on the radio (Cadena Ser) where you  can send  your micro-stories and the best of the week are read and one is chosen out of three.

The Women Writers Day is a commemoration which began in 2016 in Spain to make the work of women in literature visible and combat the discrimination they have suffered throughout history.
https://diadelasescritoras.bne.es/

This reminded me  one of the projects I would like you to develop this academical year:
Find out about women who have used  a pseudonym to see their pieces of work published.
And I can't avoid thinking of the Brontë sisters. But there are so many examples!!!
Can you think of any?
How do you feel about doing some research about it?

In case you are interested in the radio programme I have mentioned and maybe  even send your micro-story to enter the competition:

Supreme Court finds jailed Catalan secession leaders guilty of sedition

And in SPAIN? What are people talking about here today?

The Spanish Supreme Court has sentenced nine Catalan separatist leaders to between nine and 13 years in prison after finding them guilty of sedition in connection with the unilateral breakaway attempt of October 2017.

Ireland After Brexit . News in levels. 1 BACH

Do you ever listen to the news?
Have you been following what is going on with Brexit?
Do you think it may affect you or someone you know?

https://www.newsinlevels.com/products/ireland-after-brexit-level-1/

Ann Cook, the woman who released 39 New York public institutes from exams

Ann Cook (Chicago, 1940) has changed the rules of the educational system game in the State of NY. This history teacher got 10 years ago that students from 39 public institutes in that region do not have to face exams. In the rest of the state centers, students must take five tests at the end of high school - Mathematics, Global History, American History, Science and English Language - to get the degree and to access the University. Cook's fight is against the call teaching to the test, an increasingly widespread trend in the United States that consists in measuring the success of schools and the effectiveness of teachers based on student grades. Now, the results of his experiment begin to be visible: 90% of the students in his network of institutes - 28 are in New York City and 11 spread throughout the state - access the University, compared to 58% on average from the rest of public centers in the region.
“The obsession to measure knowledge with external state exams - which are developed by the authorities and not by teachers - is diverting us from the purpose of educating citizens; we are teaching the kids tricks to pass an exam and that does not motivate them at all, ”laments Cook, promoter of the network of centers known as New York Performance Standards Consortium, which this week gave a seminar on alternative evaluation methods organized by the Unesco Center of Catalonia and the Jaume Bofill Foundation in Barcelona, to which this newspaper was invited.

BACH. THE HISTORY OF THE CINEMA IN TEN MOVIES

If you are into classic films, as I mentioned in class, you can watch some of them for free, a debate will follow each screening.

2 ESO BILINGUAL AND NON BILINGUAL.PRESENT CONTINUOUS AND A LOT MORE

I think I have found the perfect song to practise the structures we are studying. It is an old song that I sometimes sing when I want to explain the meaning of  the verb wonder. Despite being old it is sometimes on the radio or commercials.  It is great for the present continuous.
What other tenses do you find in the lyrics?

I........ ...... ...here in the boring room It's just another rainy Sunday afternoon I........... .......... my time, I got nothing to do I ........... .......... around, I'm waiting for you
But nothing ever happens and I wonder I........... .......... around in my car I'm driving too fast, I'm driving too far I'd like to change my point of view I feel so lonely, I........... .......... for you But nothing ever happens and I wonder I wonder how, I wonder why Yesterday you told me 'bout the blue blue sky And all that I can see is just a yellow lemon tree I........... ..........my head up and down
I'm turning turning turning turning turning around And all that I can see is just another lemon tree
.....
The song goes on but we are going to leave it here. You can of course listen to it at home😍😍😍
                                                👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

For my 2 ESO Non bilingual.
I really love the  SHOOP SHOOP SONG to make sure my students
learn how to ask questions in the present simple.
Can you understand the first question?
Write it down!
But there is a lot more in the lyrics!

I am more than happy for the following discovery: BROKEN PEACH. A band from VIGO!!!! They are singing the same song. Which version do you like the best?

.............      .......     ..............  ...........?
 want to know
How can I tell if he .............. me so..
Is it in his eyes?
Oh no! You'll be deceived
Is it in his sighs?
Oh no! He'll make believe
If you want to know if he ............ you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is
Oh yeah
Or is it in his ..........?   (part of the body)
Oh no! That's just his charms
In ............ warm embrace?   (possessive adjective)
Oh no! That's just his ..........?   (part of the body)
If you want to know if he loves you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is
Whoa oh it's in his kiss
That's where it is
Whoa hug him and squeeze him tight
Find out what you want to know
If it's love, if it really is
It's there in his kiss
How about the way he acts
Oh no! That's not the way
And you'........    .......   ........... to all I say
If you wanna know if he .......... you so
It's in his kiss
That's where it is
Oh it's in his kiss
That's where

1 BACH Present Perfect Continuous 1 BACH

Just after the future (we won't spend too much time revising that) we will be paying attention to the Perfect forms. The firstt lines of Counting stars by ONE REPUBLIC are great to introduce the Present Perfect Contiuous. Sorry we are not going to listen to the rest of the song this time.

Can you understand what has been going on lately?

Lately I..............., I .............. ................ sleep
Dreaming about the things that we could be
But baby I ..........., I ............. ..............' hard
Said no more counting dollars
We......... ................ stars
Yeah, we............. ................ stars

There are great songs to practise the Present Perfect and I have used them all these past years and created posts for my students, so let's have a look!
